Making Sure The Wheels Don't Fall Off

Keen young mountain bike fans are being offered a crash course in keeping their cycles in tip top shape. The Forestry Commission is hosting a special bike repair workshop for youngsters in Hamsterley Forest, near Bishop Auckland, on Sunday 19 August, from 10am to 1pm. The aim is to equip them with basic skills so that punctures, loose nuts and poor brakes don’t put a spanner in the works of a perfect day out in the forest. Showing how it’s done will be experts from the Wood n’ Wheels Bike Centre in the 5,000 acre County Durham woodland. Ranger Neil Taylor said: “There are loads of kids using Hamsterley's trails, having a great time, keeping fit and developing their skills. But a bit of basic knowledge on maintaining bikes can go a long way to ensuring a safe day in the saddle.” The workshop costs £5 and booking is required on 01388 488222.
